Press mentions let a business point visitors to independent articles, interviews, reviews, blog posts, magazine features, and other published coverage. In Openleet, saved mentions appear in the In the news area of the public business profile.
This guide explains how to add coverage accurately without overstating what the publisher said or reusing protected text, logos, and images without permission.
Saving a press mention makes it public. The current manager has no separate draft, private, or published switch, so add only entries that are complete and ready for public display.
1. Decide whether the source belongs in Press & endorsements
A suitable press mention is a publicly accessible item from an identifiable publisher that meaningfully discusses the business, its people, work, products, services, or community activity.
Examples can include:
- a news article;
- an interview or podcast page;
- a magazine feature;
- an independent blog post;
- an editorial review;
- an award announcement from the awarding organization; or
- a relevant industry or community publication.
Do not present the following as independent press coverage without clear context:
- a post written and published by your own business;
- a paid advertisement or sponsored article with its disclosure removed;
- a press release copied to a distribution site;
- a basic directory listing;
- an automatically generated profile;
- a social-media comment with no stable publication page; or
- an article that mentions only another business with a similar name.
If coverage was sponsored, paid for, supplied by the business, or based on an affiliate relationship, keep the original disclosure visible and avoid language that implies independent endorsement.
2. Open the press-mentions manager
- Sign in to Openleet.
- Select the business you want to manage.
- Open Profile.
- Choose Press & endorsements.
- Select Add article.
The form supports up to 50 mentions. A shorter collection of credible, relevant coverage is usually clearer than a long list of weak or repetitive links.
3. Copy the article title accurately
Enter the title shown on the original publication. The field requires between 3 and 200 characters.
Do not rewrite the headline to make it sound more favourable, remove an important qualification, or add the business name when it was not part of the published title. If the original title is extremely long, shorten it only when the result remains recognizably accurate and does not change its meaning.
4. Identify the publisher
Enter the public publisher name shown on the source, such as the newspaper, magazine, broadcaster, blog, association, or community organization. The field requires between 2 and 120 characters.
Use the publisher—not the journalist, host, author, or person quoted—as the Publisher value. Author information remains available on the linked source when the publisher provides it.
Do not add Featured by, Approved by, or Endorsed by unless that relationship is explicitly supported by the source.
5. Add the direct article link
The article link is required and must be a valid URL. Link directly to the published item whenever possible.
Before saving, confirm that the URL:
- opens the exact article, interview, review, or feature;
- refers to the correct business;
- is publicly reachable without your private account;
- is not an editing, preview, tracking-management, or administration link;
- keeps any sponsorship or affiliate disclosure visible; and
- uses the publisher's canonical page rather than an unauthorized copy.
A source may later move, add a paywall, change its content, or disappear. Review saved links periodically.
6. Record the published date
Use the date shown by the publisher. Do not substitute the date you discovered the article or the date you added it to Openleet.
If the publisher displays a corrected or updated date, preserve the original publication context where possible. Leave the field empty when no reliable publication date is available rather than guessing.
7. Use only a short, accurate quotation
The quotation field is optional and accepts up to 500 characters. Use it for a brief excerpt that directly concerns the business and helps visitors understand why the source is relevant.
When quoting:
- copy the wording accurately;
- preserve the original meaning and necessary context;
- do not join separate sentences in a misleading way;
- use an ellipsis carefully when omitting text;
- do not correct the publisher silently if a correction changes the quotation;
- keep the excerpt brief; and
- rely on the article link for the complete work.
Copyright exceptions vary by jurisdiction and situation. Openleet's character limit is a product limit, not permission to copy 500 characters. Use only the amount you are legally permitted to reproduce, and ask the publisher when rights are unclear.
Linking to an article does not grant permission to copy its text, logo, photograph, illustration, screenshot, or thumbnail.
8. Use publisher logos only when permitted
The Publisher logo field accepts a public image URL. A publisher's name and logo can be protected differently: accurately naming the source may be necessary for attribution, while displaying its logo may require trademark or brand-policy permission.
Before adding a logo URL:
- review the publisher's trademark and brand-use policy;
- use an official asset only when your use is authorized;
- preserve required colours, proportions, clear space, and symbols;
- do not recolour, crop, stretch, animate, or combine the logo;
- do not position it in a way that implies sponsorship, partnership, or endorsement;
- stop using it if the permission or underlying relationship ends; and
- do not hotlink the publisher's file unless the publisher permits that use.
If permission is uncertain, leave the logo field empty. The title and publisher name can identify the source without the logo.
9. Use article thumbnails only with image rights
The optional thumbnail field also accepts a public image URL. Use a thumbnail only when the publisher, photographer, licence, or other rights holder permits your business to reproduce or embed it in this context.
Do not assume that an image is free to use because it appears in a public article, search result, social preview, or screenshot. Avoid:
- copying the article's main photograph without permission;
- uploading or linking to a full-page screenshot;
- removing a watermark or credit;
- using an image licensed only to the publisher;
- hotlinking an image against the publisher's terms; or
- using a temporary or access-controlled image URL.
When rights are unclear, omit the thumbnail. A press card can still be useful with the title, publisher, date, link, and an authorized short quotation.
10. Save and review the complete list
Select Save press mentions after checking every entry. All rows must pass validation before the list can be saved. An empty row added accidentally can prevent saving until it is completed or removed.
The save action treats the submitted form as the business's complete press-mention list. Removing a row and saving deletes that mention from Openleet. Entries are stored in the sequence shown in the form, so review the full list before saving several additions or removals.
Where press mentions appear
Saved press mentions can appear in the In the news section of the Openleet business profile. Their public source information may also be included in supported machine-readable descriptions of the business.
Openleet provides the link and attribution; it does not verify that every publisher is independent, confirm the truth of every article, or convert a mention into an endorsement. The linked publisher remains responsible for its publication, while the business owner is responsible for accurately entering and lawfully reusing the information shown in Openleet.
Press mentions do not currently create a separate tenant-navbar page. Keep the source link working so visitors can inspect the original context.
Update or remove a mention
Return to Profile → Press & endorsements when information changes.
- Correct a title, publisher, link, date, or quotation that is inaccurate.
- Replace or remove a logo or thumbnail when permission changes.
- Remove a broken link when no reliable replacement exists.
- Remove a mention that refers to the wrong business or no longer has useful context.
- Preserve visible corrections, retractions, and sponsorship disclosures from the original source.
If a publisher retracts or materially corrects an article, do not continue presenting the earlier version in a way that misleads visitors.
Distinguish press, testimonials, and external reputation
Choose the Openleet feature that matches the source:
- Use Press & endorsements for a published article, interview, review, or media feature about the business.
- Use Testimonials for an individual customer's quoted experience, with permission and source attribution.
- Use External reputation for the current average score and total review count displayed by a third-party platform.
One source can sometimes be relevant in more than one context, but avoid duplicating it merely to make the business appear more prominent.
